Quick answer

Primer peels off miniatures because of surface contamination, mold release residue, or a too-thick application. Fix it by washing the miniature in warm soapy water, lightly sanding glossy areas, and applying thin, even coats of primer.

Common Causes of Primer Peeling

The most frequent culprit is leftover mold release agent on the miniature. Many unpainted miniatures, including those from Nolzur's Marvelous Miniatures line, are manufactured with a thin layer of silicone or oil to help them pop out of the mold. If you don't remove it, primer can't bond to the plastic and will peel off in flakes.

Another cause is handling the miniature with bare hands before priming. Natural skin oils transfer to the surface and create a barrier. Even a quick rinse might not remove these oils if you use cold water alone.

A too-thick primer coat can also peel. When you spray or brush on a heavy layer, the outer surface dries quickly while the solvent underneath remains wet. As the solvent evaporates, it lifts the dried film, causing peeling.

How to Fix Peeling Primer

If the primer has already peeled, you need to remove the loose paint first. Use a stiff brush or a toothpick to gently scrape away any flaking areas. Don't try to paint over peeling primer – it will only get worse.

Wash the miniature thoroughly with warm water and a drop of dish soap. Use an old toothbrush to scrub into recesses. Rinse well and let it dry completely – at least an hour. For stubborn residue, a quick wipe with isopropyl alcohol on a cotton swab can help.

Once dry, lightly sand the affected areas with fine-grit sandpaper or a nail buffer. This gives the primer a mechanical key. Then apply a new, thin coat of primer. Let it dry fully before painting. If the primer still peels after this, the miniature may need to be stripped completely and restarted.

Diagnosis: Peeling Primer

  • Symptom: Primer flakes off in patches, especially on smooth surfaces or edges. Check if the miniature was washed before priming.
  • Likely Cause: Mold release residue, skin oils, or a thick primer coat. Wash with soapy water and sand glossy areas.
  • Corrective Action: Remove loose primer, wash, sand, and reapply thin coat. If it still peels, strip and restart. Stop painting until the surface is properly prepped.
