A practical FAQ on the Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft Collector's Edition Box: what it contains, who the horror miniatures suit, and how to decide before buying.
Quick answer
The Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft Collector's Edition Box is a pre-painted D&D Icons of the Realms set built around Ravenloft's horror themes, and it's the 21st set in that line. Buy it if you want a large, ready-to-play collection of gothic and cosmic horror miniatures for Ravenloft or Curse of Strahd campaigns; skip it if you only need a handful of figures or prefer to paint your own.
What the box is designed to do
This is a Collector's Edition Box, not a single miniature or a starter pack. WizKids describes it as continuing its line of epic Collector's Boxes, and the set is themed to the mist-shrouded lands of Ravenloft, where Darklords, vampires, zombie hordes, and cosmic terrors appear. That theme is the point: the figures are chosen to support horror-forward encounters rather than a generic fantasy mix.
Which miniatures you can expect
The product record names the kinds of creatures the set is built around: ageless vampires, zombie hordes, cosmic terrors, and worse, all tied to Ravenloft's Darklords. It does not publish a complete figure-by-figure list, so treat any online 'full list' with caution unless it comes from the manufacturer. What you can rely on is the horror and Ravenloft theme plus the pre-painted Icons of the Realms format.
How it fits a Curse of Strahd campaign
If you run Curse of Strahd or another Ravenloft game, the set's horror focus means many figures can stand in for common foes and NPCs without you hunting down singles. You still may want specific named characters from other sets, so check your encounter list against the box's theme before assuming full coverage.
Pre-painted vs. paint-yourself
Every figure in this box is pre-painted, so it is playable out of the box. If you enjoy painting, Nolzur's Marvelous Miniatures or similar unpainted lines give you more control over color schemes, but they require time and supplies. The Ravenloft box trades that hobby step for immediate table use.
Ravenloft box FAQ
- Is the miniatures list published?
- The supplied catalog facts describe the set's themes and line but do not include a complete figure-by-figure list. Check the manufacturer's official product page or the box itself for the final contents. Do not buy based on an unofficial list alone.
- Do I need this box for Curse of Strahd?
- No. It is a themed collection, not a required purchase. It helps most if you want a broad set of horror-appropriate pre-painted figures in one go. Buy for convenience and theme, not obligation.
- Can I use these minis outside Ravenloft?
- Yes. Vampires, zombies, and cosmic horrors appear in many D&D settings, so the figures can serve generic undead or aberration encounters too. The theme limits nothing at the table.
- Pre-painted or unpainted?
- This box is pre-painted. If you want to choose your own colors and practice painting, an unpainted line such as Nolzur's Marvelous Miniatures is the better fit. Pick based on whether you want to paint.
- How does it compare to a single premium figure?
- A single figure like the D&D Icons of the Realms Premium Figures: Human Female Druid is a low-cost way to add one character. The Collector's Box is a larger, higher-commitment purchase for a whole campaign theme. Start with a single figure if you are unsure about scale or style.
